Yes, thought Northants were another early adopter.  Perhaps Paul Gilman knows when Essex first adopted GIS for their HER.  I also have a hazy memory of an article by someone who had used GIS to document the archaeology of a small island off coast somewhere which seemed revolutionary to me at the time.

Like Alison, I’m not sure what you would classify as ‘integrated’ exactly Mike, but if I remember correctly the Northamptonshire SMR stopped using paper maps in 1993 when it transferred to Mapinfo as part of a GIS pilot project for the county council, driven mainly by the National Mapping Programme. (The Raunds Area Project had been using an MSDOS version of Mapinfo to compile its mapping for at least two years prior to this.) The SMR mapping was however only partially linked to our old Oracle database (I think we managed to get Mapinfo to link to Oracle, but not vice versa). It’s all a bit hazy now!

Yes important not to lose sight of these landmarks.  Another one which I would be interested to know the answer to is which was the first SMR to have an integrated GIS and when.  Essex possibly?

A Friday question with a bit of a difference but definitely on topic :)

 

This June the HER Forum list celebrates its 15th birthday. This is quite an achievement, especially as the list remains quite active.

 

It would be great if we could find a way to celebrate this achievement on the list - a digital celebration if you will. So for the week where the birthday falls we'd like to do some on-list activities. We'll be asking you to reminisce about your time on the list, what you like about it etc. (So make sure you save your stories for then!) We will also be asking for you ideas for the future for both the e-mail list and the Forum meetings.

 

However I'd like to throw this out to you, the subscribers, and ask what you would like to do to mark the occasion? Maybe a special Friday query session or a quiz of sorts?
