Hello Helen,

I would point you towards:

National Museums Liverpool http://www.liverpoolmuseums.org.uk/learning/projects/house-of-memories/

Beamish - http://www.beamish.org.uk/reminiscence/

Manchester Museum: http://www.ageofcreativity.co.uk/items/645

National Museums Northern Ireland: http://www.ageofcreativity.co.uk/items/687

Glasgow Museums: http://www.ageofcreativity.co.uk/items/638

The inspiration case studies on http://www.ageofcreativity.co.uk/  are great and you can search using the term dementia. http://www.ageofcreativity.co.uk/inspiration/dementia There are increasing numbers of heritage case studies on this great website, but also lots of useful information from arts organisations working with older audiences.

Have you tried partnering with your local authority/local Dementia support groups/local Age UK/Alzheimer’s Society to see if they can help you with Dementia awareness training?

Have you any connection with Luminate – Scotland’s festival of ageing: http://www.luminatescotland.org/ They might have more thoughts about more local support/other professionals with whom you could share experiences.

You could use the Age of Creativity website to share your experiences too – it’s easy to upload case studies…

Lastly, have you thought about being part of Age Collective (a network of museums all interested in working with and for older people?) If you’d like to be added to the network’s lists then just drop me a line back – [log in to unmask]

All the best,

Laura

Subject: Training (or anything) to help with delivering tours/reminiscence sessions for people with dementia

Hi,

Does anyone know of any good resources, training or meetings, online discussions (etc) about delivering reminiscence sessions or guided tours for people with dementia?

We have found during our museum tours and object-handling sessions for visually impaired or disabled groups that occasionally someone will have a certain level of dementia, but still enjoy the descriptions and dressing up, and often be prompted to remember and share interesting stories and memories. We’d like to offer more for groups like this, it seems to be something that local care homes would appreciate, but we do need some guidance to help when a group seems relatively unresponsive, or struggles to communicate. Unfortunately, we can’t afford expensive or distant training courses! We’re based in Haddington, East Lothian.

Many thanks for any advice.

Helen
