Hi All,

We actually do give out full exam scripts under the DPA - a decision taken before I arrived. We make it very clear in the Regulations ( and I think all Uni's are the same, but I stand to be corrected) that you cannot challenge academic judgment, so even if they pay to have them marked independently they can't use a different academic 'opinion' on it's own as a basis for an appeal or a challenge.

I have always assumed that it was simply down to sheer weight of numbers that could possibly request their entire scripts every year. Here, it is a service that the students like and has never caused us an issue (silently crosses fingers behind back) apart from weight of administration. Some departments even set days for students to come in and view their scripts and set appointments with Tutors if they wish to go through them.

"I've always understood it's to keep any comments made by an examiner private (to the examiner/board) and to preserve the anonymity of the examiner doing the marking"

But examiner's comments *can* be disclosed - see para 8 of Sch7: "personal data consisting of marks or other information processed by a data controller personal data consisting of marks or other information processed by a data controller".

It's been suggested to me by some very knowledgeable people that it was to prevent students having their scripts independently marked, by an assessor of their choice, in order to challenge poor results.

Don't they publish the "past papers" for public exams any more. When I was at school we had piles of old A-level which were used for setting homework, and I'm petty sure the University published past Tripos papers too.

I've always understood it's to keep any comments made by an examiner private (to the examiner/board) and to preserve the anonymity of the examiner doing the marking.
