Visual Methods: An Interdisciplinary Exploration

Friday, 2 May 2014, 09:45 - 15 :30

CMR01, The Open University, Walton Hall, Milton Keynes

This workshop is organised by Professor Elizabeth Silva and Dr Mark Smith

Speakers include: Dr Nirmal Puwar, Dr Chris High, Dr Claudia Aradau and
Professor Gillian Rose

Summary: A number of disciplines make use of visual materials - images,
drawings, videos, sensory stimuli - in research investigations. These
include sociology, geography, anthropology, politics and psychology. There
is a rich literature on practical and methodological issues in these
disciplines, and in others, and the interest in visually-oriented research
projects is on the rise. This day workshop brings together experienced
researchers in a variety of Social Science disciplines to share their
experience of using visual methods. This advanced methods workshop is highly
relevant to postgraduate students who are starting out on their journey. It
is also relevant to those who have already used visual methods and want to
compare and contrast their experience with visual methods researchers in
other disciplines. A hands on workshop on participatory video is also
planned during the day.
