Join us for this informative talk on the stunning Jones’
Icones, a 18th century manuscript containing over 1500 watercolour paintings of butterflies and moths, compiled from some of the earliest Lepidoptera collections in Britain. A rare opportunity to see these remarkably beautiful volumes.
Presented by Prof Dick Vane-Wright.
Supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund, the mission of the Oxford University Museum William Jones project is at first sight simple enough:
to digitise and make freely available, via the Internet, the entirety of the six volume
Icones. The ways in which this will benefit the global entomological community will be discussed. But this project also raises another issue: who was William Jones, and what else did he do? The
talk will conclude with a brief review of what is currently known about Jones, including some recent discoveries, while at the same time pointing to what we don’t know—and how the current HLF project may help us find out more about this fascinating man and
his work.
Museum exhibit on this important work is also currently on display near the new Museum Café.
Flying Icons: Digitising the Jones'
Icones, and this Lecture are supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund.
