Last year, Cornwall Archives and Local Studies Service received stage 1 confirmation of a £10 million grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund to create a new, combined home for Cornwall's archive, local studies and historic environment services and collections.

As part of this exciting project, Cornwall Council is seeking to appoint a Collections Officer, who will play a key role in the project, with responsibility for the planning, preparation and management of the transfer of the archive, historic library and historic environment record collections from their current locations to the new facility in 2017. This role will be vital to collection care, ensuring continuity of service and

minimising impact on service users.

The collections officer also has a wider remit within the Culture Team to implement the Cultural Asset Collection action plan. The plan identifies a series of recommendations the role holder will need to undertake to ensure that the Council’s collection of paintings, sculptures and pottery are managed appropriately. The collections officer will set up, implement and manage the work programmes associated with the project. As well as undertaking the delivery of activities, the role holder will be responsible for directing and monitoring members of the service teams and volunteers who will be assisting them in order to keep the programmes on time and to budget. The collections officer will also be responsible for ensuring best practice in terms of collection care and information capture to facilitate the relocation.

The collections officer will make recommendations to the Project Board regarding collection management systems, storage and preservation management, and be the service contact point for internal/external partners and the shelving contractor in the building design work. The role will be influential in ensuring optimum use of space and operational efficiency in the new facility.
