Is anyone willing to share useful experience of a project involving scanning glass plate negatives and other materials with the aim of producing a public-facing database thereof? We ( in this case, Coventry Transport Museum, which together with The Herbert and Coventry History Centre make up Culture Coventry) are in the early stages of developing a methodology to provide access to images from the Rootes Co. Specific questions include: - scanner specification/recommendations - I assume a card or foam cut-out will be required to compensate for the thickness of the plate across the rest of the platen and exclude light? if there's a dinky attachment to do this, is it any better than DIY versions and therefore worth the extra money? - any tips on methodology? We expect to use volunteers/trainees - any interesting programs that would help us match scans of negs with prints? - views/tips on front ends - do's, don'ts etc. One option is to link with Adlib - once we've converted from Calm - anything else we've not thought of (yet...) I'm told the negs are A5 max (whole plate by the sound of it, so probably smaller also - survey starts after Easter) Many thanks Jane Pudsey Contact the list owner for assistance at [log in to unmask] For information about joining, leaving and suspending mail (eg during a holiday) see the list website at https://www.jiscmail.ac.uk/cgi-bin/webadmin?A0=archives-nra
