Looking at the OED, could these men have been Corinthians?  That would have certainly been notable (sorry, couldn’t resist) J

Cordwainer sounds reasonable but I agree with your reservations- especially if not other occupations are noted.

Could corder be a candidate?- meaning a shepherd (with its obvious religious overtones)- some sort of lay religious functionary within the Parish?

Whatever the truth of it, it is certainly a tricky one.

If nothing else, I smell an opportunity for some press coverage/promo here… ‘In search of the lost cord- the mystery men of Uxbridge’

Be good to hear the resolution of this.

Dear All

thanks for the suggestions of cordwainer - we did think of that ourselves but this is the only person with anything after his name so we couldn't see why a cordwainer would be singled out, especially as it was not a major industry here.

We'll continue to puzzle!

Yours sincerely,

Dear Carolynne

Cordwainer is a sound suggestion, but Corvisor is also widely used - with the same meaning (i.e. someone working with leather and frequently shoes).

One of the most useful handy sources for reference on such things is Stuart R Raymond's 'Words from Wills - and other Probate Records' (FFHS 2004 and later).  Your volunteers would find it very useful ito have access to a copy.

Can anyone help?
Some of our volunteers are transcribing 18th century churchwardens books and have come across an abbreviation we can't decipher.  In the lists of ratepayers from the mid 1730s to 1750s one man has the abbreviation Cor. or Cord after his name e.g. John Smith Cor.  Over the years about 3 different men have this after their name and we can't work out why.  Does anyone have any ideas?

All suggestions gratefully received.

Yours sincerely,
