More details:
Recent years have seen an explosion in the incorporation of genetic data into UK datasets. The availability of these data allows researchers to take new approaches in studying associations between social factors and health. To take advantage of these opportunities researchers require knowledge about current techniques in genetic epidemiology, including the conduct of large scale association studies and follow-up of findings.
Aims of the course:
This intermediate course will explain the principles and methods involved in genome-wide association studies. Approaches will be described to follow up the findings of these studies, in particular Mendelian randomisation using genes as instruments to reduce bias in observational studies. A case study of the genetics of educational attainment will be presented in detail. The course assumes knowledge of basic genetic inheritance and statistical methods, but no experience of genetic data analysis is assumed.
Speakers include:
Professor Bianca De Stavola (LSHTM)
Professor Frank Dudbridge (LSHTM)
Professor Juan Pablo Casas (LSHTM and UCL)
Professor Melinda Mills (University of Groningen, Netherlands)
