UK Data Service hour-long webinar on the topic of ageing

This is a collaborative webinar involving the UK Data Service and Dr Alan Marshall from the Frailty Resilience and Inequality in Later life (fRaill)
project at the University of Manchester.
This free webinar will showcase data on the topic of ageing
that is available from the UK Data Service and will highlight the research potential of the data.
UK Data Service staff will introduce:
• the types of data available
• how the data can be accessed
• the useful online support materials
held by the UK Data Service
Dr Alan Marshall will give an overview of how data, such as
the English Longitudinal Study of Ageing and the Census, are used to examine issues such as:
• frailty
• inequalities in frailty changes
in later life
• retirement and self-reported illness
• inequalities in care outcomes
• neighbourhood health effects

Webinar: International data in the UK Data Service

The UK Data Service is holding a free webinar on
the structure, content and research potential of the international databases accessible through the service.
The UK Data Service provides online access to the
major databanks produced by international governmental organisations such as the World Bank, IMF, OECD and United Nations. This 45-minute webinar provides an overview of the international databases you can access through the service and demonstrates the web
interfaces used to explore, subset and download the data.
*Please note under our licensing agreements,
you must be a student or member of staff at a UK higher education institution to access these databases through the service.*
The webinar will be led by Richard Wiseman and
Celia Russell of the University of Manchester.

Opinions and Lifestyle Survey user conference

The next Opinions and Lifestyle Survey user conference, organised
by the UK Data Service, will be held on Friday 16 May 2014 in London. It will be a half-day meeting starting at 13.00 and is free to attend.
The meeting will allow users to hear updates from the Office
for National Statistics on the Opinions and Lifestyle Survey, which was created in 2012 as a result of merging the ONS Opinions survey with some of the previous General Lifestyle Survey questions.

Using the Opinions and Lifestyle Survey to measure internet access
Cecil Prescott, Office for National Statistics
Using the ONS Opinions Survey to investigate the relationship
between driving-licence-holding and online activity

The
UK Data Service – an introduction to data and resources for social scientists

This
free half-day workshop will introduce participants to the data available from the UK Data Service.
The
workshop is aimed primarily at research postgraduates but will be of relevance to other social scientists, research methods teachers and librarians who wish to learn more about the resources and support offered by the UK Data Service.
