Subject: Introductory resources and videos on realist evaluation

Hi Everyone, I have just put together an introductory resources list and some short introductory videos on realist evaluation (featuring the inimitable Ray Pawson) There is a short overview video, plus four parts of introduction (which are actually less edited versions of the overview, so there is repetition that may be useful for the uninitiated and slightly frustrating for those more versed in the approach!). These are all meant to be quite accessible and introductory, so may lack depth for some of the more seasoned practitioners who contribute to this list. But they are nonetheless filling a bit of gap it seems - providing simple introductions to this valuable approach - and some of you may find useful for whetting the appetites of colleagues who are less familiar with realist evaluation I produced these resources as part of some work I am doing supporting evaluation of public engagement with science for major health research programmes supported by the Wellcome Trust in developing countries. The videos can be found here: Realist evaluation short overview (14 minutes). Ray Pawson introduces the basics of Realist evaluation. https://vimeo.com/84215487 Realist evaluation Part 1 – key principles (7 minutes) introduces the key elements of realist evaluation. https://vimeo.com/84216696 Realist evaluation Part 2 – tackling complexity (9 minutes) looks at how realist evaluation helps to address complexity in social programmes. http://vimeo.com/84386879 Realist evaluation Part 3 – types of evidence (8 minutes) looks at how the method makes use of evidence and the value of a multi-method approach. http://vimeo.com/84227829 Realist evaluation Part 4 – cumulative learning and scientific method (7.5 minutes) looks at how evaluation can better contribute to cumulative learning and employ ‘scientific’ methods. http://vimeo.com/84228311 The Introductory Resources list (which includes links to the videos) is on the publicly accessible part of a ning site on bioethics: http://e-mops.ning.com/page/realist-evaluation-introductory-resources Thanks to Ray (for being in the videos) and Gill, Geoff and Bruno for feedback and suggestions.
