Hi Lizzie,
We have seen flyers like these given out occasionally at Birmingham City University. Mostly when the new students arise (alongside the people giving out free samples of pizza from the local takeaways etc).
They range from very low standard A5 leaflets (probably from a single local writer) with spelling mistakes, to polished and professional looking business cards. They just get given out to anyone passing, so lecturers, students and members of the public alike.
We have had some success at getting people to move on from university property, but most of the time, they stand outside.
The bigger challenge is when posters end up on university noticeboards (or, as I often say when I'm talking about this, pinned up inside the toilet cubicles). Of course they get taken down, but as this is inside security, it usually means that there's a student
putting the posters up (there are essay writing companies paying students commission for this).
The best solution is still probably to educate students about why using these contract cheating services doesn't benefit them and to think about assessment types that are not so easily susceptible to contract cheating.
Thanks,
Thomas
Dear Colleagues
I wondered if I could ask for your thoughts on the following issue. We are aware of people standing outside some of our campuses handing out leaflets to students saying they can write essays for them. We would
be interested in hearing whether you have you experienced the same, and whether your institution taken any deliberate steps to combat the issue.
Many thanks for your help
Lizzie
