Supporting smoking cessation in pregnancy using mobile phone interventions
Brief abstract:
There is good evidence that self-help smoking cessation support can help pregnant smokers to quit smoking. Despite this and its low cost, self-help is not provided to
pregnant smokers as part of routine care. With self-help becoming increasingly accessible via mobile phones, there is potential to promote greater use of this type of support among pregnant smokers without significantly increasing demands on health professionals
and the health service. However, little research has been undertaken in this area to date. This talk will draw on a series of studies which have focused on such knowledge gaps, including preferences for cessation support among pregnant smokers, the potential
feasibility and efficacy of a text message based cessation intervention and likely uptake scenarios if such support was offered to pregnant smokers in routine care.
Venue: Room 11D, West Smithfield Site
