REMINDER: Invitation to an STS event MONDAY 3 March 6pm

"James Lovelock, Gaia, and science on a pagan planet:
An Evening with Professor Michael Ruse"

UCL Grant Museum of Zoology
Museum opens: 18:00, with a glass of wine
Programme begins: 18:30
Programme ends: 19:30
Thereafter, the museum will be open until 20:00 for further discussion and
museum viewing.

Join us for an evening's discussion with Professor Michael Ruse (Florida
State University), led by STS's Dr Chiara Ambrosio. Ruse is the author of
a new book on James Lovelock, Lynn Margulis, and others involved in
developing the Gaia concept. Why does the public find such appeal in the
Gaia hypothesis? Why do so many scientists react aggressively (not simply
rejecting the view, but adding an unusual layer of invective to their
opposition)? Ruse believes there are deeper themes to be found when
studying this reception, and there are lessons to learn about the
priorities we have in our research.

The format for the evening will be "in-the-round" with discussion and
audience questions facilitated by Dr Chiara Ambrosio. Come ready to
discuss and enjoy an evening of scholarly exchange.
