See also Jacobus de Voragine. The Golden Legend: Readings on the Saints. Vol. 2. Edited and translated by William Granger Ryan. Princeton, 1993, 89-90:
"The angel gave the Virgin a palm branch sent from heaven as assurance of victory over the corruption of death, and the clothing for her burial, and then repaired to heaven whence he had come".

There is another representation of the Virgin with a palm in the St Alban Psalter:

The litany prescribed by the Dominican Chapter of 1256, Mary is referred to as "laus Martyrum"  ("Praise of the Martyrs").  The text is of course older than 1256.

Also, St Bernard (+ 1153) says in one of his sermons, "Martyrium Virginis, tam in Simeonis prophetia quam in ipsa dominicae passionis historia commendatur."  "The martyrdom of the Virgin is commended  both in Simeon's prophecy and in the story of the Lord's passion itself."  (In Dom. infra Assumpt., 14)  Later, in the same sermon, "Do not marvel, brothers, that Mary is said to have endured martyrdom in her soul.  Only he will marvel who forgets what Paul said of the Gentiles, that among their worst vices was that they were without compassion.  Not so Mary!"  And so on ....

So I think it is not so unusual to see Mary depicted as a martyr by 12th century, anyway.

John, if the object is indeed a palm, could it be explained by the Marian title "Queen of Martyrs"? I'm not sure, however, if this title was used as early as the 12th century. -- Paul

John, might the green object be a distaff with wool instead?

Learned List members,

I wonder if anyone can explain this image for me. It is from an 11th-12 c. northern French antiphonary and is presumably an image of Mary, since it appears in the texts for the office of the Nativity of the BVM; but I have never seen an image of the Virgin with what looks like a green palm of martyrdom. Can this be?

thanks

John W.
