medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture

I’m not sure when Achard was canonized, if at any time. Hugh Feiss, in his translation of Achard’s works (Cistercian Publications, 2001) simply notes that he is  venerated as “blessed: in the diocese of Coutances-Avranches. In any case, some more information (including a fairly complete annotated bibliography) can be found on:

Hi George. This Canons Regular website claims Achard of St Victor (second abbot, d. 1171) as a saint:

Butler has him in the Lives of the Saints on 2 May. Perhaps he is to be found in the Bibliotheca Sanctorum or the Acta SS? -- Paul

That’s hugely helpful, Gary! I’ll see if I can dig up this material on my own, but should I fail to do so, it is reassuring to know I can count on your kind generosity.

Best wishes, George

Although I have not run across any cults in honor of the Victorines, there is a miracle story told of Hugh.  He was able to discern an unconsecrated host on his deathbed.  The story is told by Vincent of Beauvais and repeated by Jacob of Vorgine.  Interestingly enough a similar and earlier version of the story appeared in Robert of Courcon's Summa, however here the story is about Maurice de Sully, not Hugh of St. Victor.  The story about Hugh is discussed by Peter Browe in his Die eucharistischen Wunder des Mittelalters, (Breslau, 1938) pp. 36-38.  Robert's story is described and transcribed in my "Medieval Theology of the Eucharist and the Chapel of the Miracle Corporal," Viven Homo 18 (2007): 63-64.   If you have trouble consulting either of these works, I can send you scans of the relevant sections. I hope this helps a little.

George: as far as I know, none of these venerable men were ever revered as saints. Still, Hugh is one of the few "moderni" that often gets cited alongside the Fathers. None of the other Victorines attained such prominence, despite their popularity. Andrew is often cited in exegetical literature, but not always with approval (see my article in Ineke Van't Spijker's The Multiple Meaning of Scripture).

Dear medieval-religion colleagues,

Having recently come across lots of cults in honour of members of various mendicant orders and the Benedictines, I wonder if any of you might know of any cults held in honour of any Victorines (e.g. Richard, Andrew, Adam - and especially Hugh)?

Thanks, as always, for any information you may have and are able to share.

Best wishes, George
