Research Assistant (6 months) 'Making the invisible visible: enabling audiences to ’see’ archive collections' (Queen Mary with the Geffrye Museum of the Home)

Applications are invited for a six month, fixed term, part-time Research Assistant post, based in the School of Geography at Queen Mary, University of London. The postholder will be working on a collaborative research project between Queen Mary and the Geffrye Museum of the Home entitled ‘Making the invisible visible: enabling audiences to ’see’ archive collections’. The collaboration is funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council’s Creativeworks London ‘creative voucher’ scheme, which aims to support knowledge exchange activities between universities and London’s creative sector.

The aim of this project is to research, develop and report on visualisation models for presenting the Geffrye Museum’s ‘Documenting Homes’ archive across digital platforms. The Museum has a unique archive of highly documented, digitized photographs of ordinary people’s homes dating from the late nineteenth century to the present. The collection includes questionnaires completed by occupants of the homes, in-depth audio and filmed interviews and occasional manuscript and object-type material such as household bills and textile samples. It now amounts to over 6,000 items and offers an exceptionally rich resource both visually and in terms of contextual information about people’s homes. The postholder will explore new ways of allowing the museum’s digital audiences to select, interrogate, organise and interpret the archival material. The material lends itself to a number of different approaches – for example geo-spatial, time-based or thematic visualisations, but we are open to explore as yet undetermined methods of presentation working collaboratively with digital experts and our various audiences/user groups.

Applicants should have an MSc in a relevant subject (eg information studies or computer science) or relevant experience, knowledge and understanding of the field of data presentation in museum and archive environments.

The post is part time (17.5 hours per week) for 6 months, starting from 1 May 2014 or as soon as possible thereafter. The salary will be equivalent to £28,742 per annum (pro-rata) inclusive of London Allowance. Based in the School of Geography, the postholder will be affiliated to the Centre for Studies of Home – a joint venture between the Geffrye and Queen Mary.

Candidates must be able to demonstrate their eligibility to work in the UK in accordance with the Immigration, Asylum and Nationality Act 2006. Where required this may include entry clearance or continued leave to remain under the Points Based Immigration Scheme.

Informal enquiries may be made by email to Dr Alastair Owens (at Queen Mary: [log in to unmask]) or Eleanor John (at Geffrye Museum: ejohn@geffrye-museum.org.uk)
