We are offering six grants of £725 each to attend the next IFLA World Library and Information Congress at Lyon (16-22 August 2014). And with the English Speaking Union (ESU) we are also offering a “Travelling Librarian” award of £3000 to fund a study tour in the USA or Commonwealth. Attending IFLA Lyon The IFLA World Library and Information Congress is the foremost international library, knowledge and information conference in the world. It brings together 4000 delegates from across the globe providing immense opportunities to develop new contacts, participate in lively discussion and debate, and learn about the international dimensions of professional issues. Once there you are likely to want to keep up the contacts made and see your own work in a totally new way. CILIP are offering six grants of £725 to help members attend. Typically this would cover the early registration fee of about £380 (depending on exchange rate), leaving a contribution of £345 to other costs. Three of the grants will be reserved for first-timers – those who have never attended an IFLA WLIC before or, if they have, it was in the UK or (for overseas members) in their country of domicile and so not counted for this purpose. The other three awards are open to all CILIP members. Applications are needed by 7 April 2014. Tell us the theme you would like to investigate further, your outline plans for libraries and associated agencies to visit, and the benefits your visit will bring to you and the wider profession. Competition is usually keen but the rewards are high and it is a chance to develop professionally and personally that few will enjoy in their careers. Recent study tours have focused on libraries supporting democracy in the USA (against the backdrop of the 2012 Presidential elections), and libraries supporting major sporting events and festivals in Australia (as exemplars of what might be done in Glasgow with this year’s Commonwealth Games).
