Special Session: Heroism in Early Modern Italy


This session considers heroic ideals from Humanism to the Counter-Reformation, their role in Italian Literature and Culture, and their influence on Early Modern conceptions of subjectivity. Papers may address (among other topics) reception of classical heroic ideals, the gendering of heroism, patronage as a heroic ideal, political theory and heroic princes, non-martial heroes, anti-heroes, religious heroism and canonization, heroic figures and the visual arts.
