Hi all,

The point, I think, is that this is a tool developed nationally, that can be used to support the work that many of us are doing locally.  There will presumably be lots of local groups in our areas wanting to record their WWI heritage and this is something we can fairly quickly point to and ensure that what we’re getting back has some consistency. Hopefully it will save a lot of time, as we won’t have to reinvent the wheel and produce toolkits locally, or worse, not have the resources to produce anything at all!

I agree Chris,

At a local scale you can control how the data comes in. You also know who and what you can trust in terms of research.

But I’m sure there’s lots of WWI related sites in every part of the country.

We just need to find the most effective way to take the opportunity of the centenary to enhance our HERs.

Hi Pete,

If your volunteers have been able to gather comprehensive and accurate data that’s great.

However, there will be  differences between the DoB data and the WWI data that you’ve gathered.  DoB was a big project with data gathered, via an outside agency, by many volunteers working all over the country. You, on the other hand, will have been able to work directly with a far smaller set of volunteers. I would imagine that the national WWI project may well be more similar to the DoB project (although I would hope that some lessons from that project will be taken on board) than to your no doubt excellent WWI project.

Chris, I wouldn’t be so sure. We’ve had our own volunteers working on enhancing our WWI data and this is the result. Points and polygons -

Louise, is there a way to bulk upload this material to the Home Front Legacies database?

Hi Helen,

A lovely idea, but I would like to check the data before it goes into the HER.

I recall some 15 years or more ago, when I was at Staffs, when I received a load of data from Defence of Britain, in essence as a digital printout. My heart sank and I thought, ‘Wouldn’t it be great if all this data could be fed directly into the SMR.’ (Old terminology I know, but it was a while ago!).

Then I started to check the data. Most of it related to pill boxes and other features on a Stop Line that ran down the Dove, onto the Trent, and up the Tame to disappear into Warwickshire. I rapidly found by checking it against APs that data supplied from DoB data was incomplete (several pill boxes that were still extant were missing from the data) and there were many inaccuracies (mainly NGRs were a bit off and some were or just plain wrong).

I don’t imagine that there will be all that much WWI data for the city; mainly war memorials, but I would not wish to just feed it in to the HER without first checking it.

Exciting!!

Can I ask if it’s still intended to do this:

“It is hoped to develop an import tool to enable auto-ingestion for HBSMR users.”

Because that would be brilliant.  J

Hi everyone,

As many of you will know from HER Forum presentations and committee meetings, the CBA is coordinating a First World War partnership engagement project to record the physical legacy of the Home Front across the UK. Good to see interest on the forum and I will respond to the various queries shortly.

We have been developing a website resource area and data-standardised recording toolkit for community groups, with funding from English Heritage, Historic Scotland and Cadw and in collaboration with ALGAO UK, RCAHMS, RCAHMW, the Welsh Trusts, NIEA and a number of other partners.

The project was launched by the CBA and English Heritage with Dan Snow on Thursday 6 March last week with extensive national and regional media coverage. Here's the BBC News video: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-hampshire-26471922

Wales and Scotland are launching the project this week with follow up activity once the project gets going.

A briefing is attached to give you some more background to the project, and detail the functionality of the recording app, and the data exchange process between the community recording data submitted and the HERs/SMRs.

To summarise: when data is submitted through the HTML5 recording app it populates a MIDAS compliant database, which HERs will be able to export using a password in either CSV/Excel spreadsheet or XML format.

The app itself uses 'locate me' OS/Bing/Google mapping technology to establish the NGR and enables dropdown menu selection of First World War terms from the English Heritage Monument and Sites and Building Materials thesauri. It also enables file and image attachments for site plans/photos and associated sources.

You can read more in the attached brief and see a screengrab from the app, project logo and press release or go to the HER Forum file sharing area here: https://www.jiscmail.ac.uk/cgi-bin/filearea.cgi?LMGT1=HERFORUM&f=/CBA

The project is above all a collaborative venture to promote good practice in data exchange between community groups, and university and community co-research through AHRC-funded First World War Centres (tbc), and HERs. We are looking for sources of funding for community training to include raising the profile of the HERs.

The data-standardised app has been developed to encourage online submission to reduce potential workload for HERs receiving paper forms from Centenary projects. The project partners hope it will set a standard and framework for future community engagement right across the UK as well as increasing our First World War records and future protection for sites.

I hope this is helpful and that you will be able to promote use of the toolkit for the Centenary.

Many thanks,

Louise
