Sarah The National Museums of Scotland had a collection of historical geological maps which were transferred to the National Library of Scotland Map Room in the 1990's (the museum had no paper conservators on the staff at the time and they needed some serious conservation). One of the maps was: Register Number NMS G.1977.36.4: A delineation of the Strata of England and Wales with a part of Scotland by W. Smith. Dedicated to Sir Joseph Banks. Drawn to a scale of 1 inch to 5 miles. Signed by W. Smith. Dated 1815. Is this any use? The National Library of Scotland website has lots of useful info and a contact number. I know there are only around 40 such maps let in existence, but I was wondering if anyone knows the whereabouts of any of these, particularly if they are on display. I know about the map at the GeolSoc of course, and the ones at Bristol University and the BGS. Additionally, we have some leads, but if anyone knows of a fairly reliable way to date our map, I would be very interested to hear from you. Many thanks for your time.
