It’s not my email so much, as my phone number which you could not proceed past without entering as the page would not complete without it, as well as my personal address.  I get worried that there are ulterior motives to most of these booking systems which also act as means of data capture. FWIW I have been in on discussions concerning the desire to use compulsory registration in order to view web pages as a means of capturing data for the purposes of garnering information that can be put to future use in targeting fundraising, so I know how these things work. Who here has not been bothered some time by an alumni association phoning one up and pestering for donations?

What I don’t like is that so often one is forced to tick a box that implies agreement with something, one does not agree too as there is no alternative way of doing things.

Dear Larry,

Following your argument, why would you post on this list where your email address and details are freely available for data mining?  If you were to submit an abstract via someone's personal email address, what guarantees do you have that your information is still not going to be sold to the highest bidder?

Having organised a small conference I can see why using a system like this is useful to the organisers but my main objection to it is that it's so long-winded.  I have no issues about the safety of my data, not least because I doubt anyone is actually interested in me enough to want to buy it.

Regards,

Liz Ellis
