Hi Ros

If a student is unable to maintain themselves for any reason liked to a disability then they have the right to request an assessment of their needs from their local adult social services.  Their needs will probably have to fall into the substantial banding to be considered (due to funding cuts).

If the student is unable to maintain their living environment and that would cause them substantial risk of harm / self neglect - then they would qualify. If their ability to keep safe (money, cooking, being with others, negotiating the environment) then the risk of harm is high - and could have a substantial impact on their life and of those around them. This ought to come under the social services remit. Here is the fair access to care leaflet for Bexley - as an example http://www.bexley.gov.uk/CHttpHandler.ashx?id=1946&p=0

The student would need to apply to their home local authority. If they are successful they would likely be given a small person budget from which to purchase support required (or employ their own helper).  If they are not successful, they, like everyone else, could choose to pay for it themselves from whatever income they have.

Hope that helps.

Rosalyn

Subject: Support from social services for help with cleaning accommodation

Hi,

Can anyone provide me with information about the provision of funding for support for disabled HEI students with cleaning of accommodation and possibly other domestic tasks? I know this cannot be funded by DSA.  Is it social services that pay for this or would the student pay from their disability benefits?

Many Thanks,

Ros Platton
