Chautari Book Series 77

About two thousand Nepali magazines have been published in the past 25
years. However, they have not been the subject of any systematic
academic studies so far. This book is a preliminary attempt to fill that
gap. It contains chapters on some of the most influential news/opinion
magazines of the last quarter century /- Mulyankan, Janamanch, Himal
Khabarpatrika, Nepal/ - as well as magazines that were part of the
women's (/Asmita)/, janajati (Tamang magazine /Chhar Gongma/, Tharu
magazines and various janajati magazines published in the 1990s) and
dalit (/Jana Utthan/) movements in Nepal. Other chapters are dedicated
to examining the links between the market and political parties with
respect to the Maoist magazines and the lives of alternative magazines
such as the bi-monthly /Himal, Asmita, Bikas and Haka-Haki/. Special
interest magazines such as /Nari /and/Nawa Yuba/ are the subject of two
separate chapters. The introduction by the editors provides an
historical overview of the magazine landscape in post-Panchayat Nepal.
This book will be of interest to specialists of Nepali print media
history and to all others who want to understand the many changes that
Nepal has underdone since 1990.
