Sydenham and Forest Hill Youth Forum

Development Officer: £10 per hour, 6 hours per week, fixed-term 6 months (with opportunity to extend pending review and funding opportunities)

Background

The Sydenham and Forest Hill Youth Forum are a small charity in terms of core operation but has a huge impact on the local community.

We advocate for youth and community groups who operate in the wards of Sydenham, Perry Vale and Forest Hill, working very closely with the Lewisham wide Children and Young People’s Voluntary Sector Forum.

We run regular forum meetings whereby anyone can drop in and tell us what they are working on and we signpost them to others with similar aims and objectives, for example signposting a healthcare professional wanting to run sessions in schools and clubs.

Alongside our face-to-face meetings, we have a website that posts local news and opportunities.  The website also signposts services to young people and parents.

Our ambition is to increase the number of financial givers so that we can help youth and community groups provide opportunities and fun activities for local youth.

We’re seeking someone with a can do attitude, a self-starter, as well as a passionate person who understands both young people and the local community as well as how to work with key decision makers.

You will have the support of the Management Committee and draw on the resources of local volunteers and partnerships, however you will be the sole employee and be expected to organise your time effectively to deliver our aims and objectives.    Should you enjoy your post after six months and with additional funding sought, opportunities to expand the hours and status of the role may become available.

This role suits someone who would like to run their own charity and to have the flexibility to run a small organisation and produce some fantastic outcomes for young people and the wider community.  The ideal candidate would aim to do this by being inclusive and collaborate with all of the organisations SFHYF work with and support.

Job Description:

1.   Make the job your own and bring creativity and passion to it

2.   Email regular updates and community news to the website and mailing list (provided)

3.   Run regular youth forum meetings (2 hours)  – every 8 weeks to share news and opportunities amongst providers

4.   Write funding bids if appropriate

5.   Meet with people who work with young people to know about their work and support them if necessary

6.   Listen to young people’s views and opinions and feed these back to decision makers

7.   Support Lewisham local assemblies team and the youth service

8.   Build partnerships with local clubs, schools and youth groups in the local community

9.   Build up the local fund and help deliver one of the Forum’s 5 key aims

10.                Develop the website, encourage new members and keep the content up-to-date
