It is with great sadness that we announce that on 18th February Alfredo Riedel passed away. Alfredo can be considered the father of Italian Archaeozoology. He was the first President of the Informal Group of Italian Archeozologists (GIAZI), transformed later into the Italian Association of Archaeozoologists (AIAZ). A geologist by profession, since the 50s he devoted himself to archaeozoological studies. His studies mainly concerned Holocene faunas from north-east Italy, Germany, Austria and Slovenia, particularly from contexts dated to the Bronze and Iron Ages.  He has left us with an impressive body of publications, many in important peer-reviewed journals. In addition to being an authoritative archaeozoologist, he will be remembered for his great affability, helpfulness and professionalism.
