If you put “CWS” and “bakelite” as Google image search keywords you come across a few of these on ebay as shaving brush/soap holders.

Hi

On first sight I wondered if it might have originally contained a styptic pencil (a short medicated stick made of a powdered material, used to stop bleeding from small cuts when shaving).

But, considering its dimensions, I wonder if perhaps it more likely held a stick of shaving soap, if it is indeed shaving related? It looks like the sort I've seen in old shaving kits before.

Dear All,

I was wondering if anyone could help me identify this object, images attached. It is 95mm tall with a diameter of 40mm. It has a screw lid and is hollow. The only mark on it is ‘CWS’ Co-operative Wholesale Society. It was dropped off at the museum with a lot of Irlam Margarine works material.

Regards,
