Hi Jo and others

Please see the link on this http://www.rcn.org.uk/newsevents/news/article/uk/rcn_closes_loophole_in_indemnity_scheme and I have attached a leaflet from the RCN and a long document which gives information about all employment situations including OH – I need to read this myself and will give the RCN a call if it doesn’t make sense and I will then share what I know.

Hi Anne

Thanks for this clarification ...

Think perhaps I am having one of ‘my moments’. Just to confirm are you saying that for those of us working in industry we would need our organisations to confirm we have professional indemnity with them (vicarious liability) as the RCN will no longer provide this as a service to us.

Apologies if I remain a little unsure!

Kind Regards

Jo

From an earlier posting it appears that  the RCN will no longer provide  indemnity for nurses who have a contract of employment. As that is the reason that most nurses, certainly most OHNs, join this is likely to impact on membership numbers so they may find they have shot themselves in the foot.

In Dawn’s posting she says that the AOHNP and the FOM are merging –  it is not the AOHNP which are merging with our medical colleagues but it is the Soc of Occ Med and the FOM which are likely to become one body. The discussions Christina is involved in relates to giving an OH  nursing perspective on a new body – a faculty which could eventually incorporate “faculties” of OH Nursing, Medicine and a further one for allied health professionals such as physios.

Such a new organisation for health professionals involved in workplace health management could eventually be involved in “validating” a range of OH programmes including those for medics and nurses. In which case registration as a SCPHN with the NMC may not be of major significance to many employers. However, registration as a nurse would still be essential. Dawn refers to “OH advisors” without registration as a health care practitioner. They are essentially  undertaking the role of  technicians. Technicians are an invaluable resource within many OH services and are brilliant at undertaking the hands on health surveillance. However, I do not envisage  them undertaking  the strategic role of driving the organisation’s workplace health management strategy nor  to devising effective return to work recovery strategies. An effective OH practitioner able to undertake such a role should be suitably qualified and registered.  Now I will find my hard hat

Thank you for capturing my exact same feelings, I too would be interested to see what our other learned colleagues think.

I object to paying membership fees to a professional body who do not understand (or seem to care) and certainly don’t represent us.

Subject: Re: [OCC-HEALTH] RCN indemnity update

Jane,

I was only thinking the other day what is the point of my RCN membership? What does it actually provide for me as a OHA?

So do we get value for money and if not do we need it? Should we just get private indemnity cover and if so would this be more cost effective?

What do other think?

I do not find the RCN Bulletin mags useful as they are clinical lead. There isn’t any recognition of OH so I have stopped reading them as I find the sharing of info on Jisc far more relevant to my practice.

The changes with revalidation again highlight how our own bodies don’t consider our specialism. Over the last 20 years the role of OH has become far more broad and the cross over into advice on policies and procedures has made us in general a less hands on and more rounded and pro- active approach. Whilst we still perform HS we have seen an increase in Technicians for this and I do wonder where we are heading. With the FOM and AOHNP looking to merge I think we need to consider if we still sit under NMC and need the RCN.

After all we need CPD that reflects our role and how much of this is via the NHS? Most is Private sector ie Dr Karmy, Fit back, Bilsom etc.

Of course we are proud of our nursing roots but would we still consider ourselves fit to practice in the NHS? I wouldn’t as I haven’t been on a ward for 10 years. That doesn’t mean I am not abreast of clinical practice for my areas. Our role is specialised but you can become an OHA without a Nursing qualification now so do we actually need to remain on the register…..

Controversial…. Tin hat on….

Dawn.

Good morning all

is anyone else struggling to work out what this means:

  1. Work undertaken by our members as part of their contract of employment will no longer be covered by our scheme.

or is it just me? Jane
