CyMAL Training Course Copyright Wrexham Museum - 01 April 2014 Media Resource Centre, Llandrindod Wells - 02 April 2014 Glamorgan Archives - 03 April 2014 This course is provided by the Welsh Government and the Archives and Records Association (ARA) and is open to staff and volunteers working in museums, archives and libraries in Wales as well as ARA members. It is suitable for those working with and advising members of the public and for those involved with the copying of materials in collections, whether for individual users or for large-scale digitisation projects. Aims * to appreciate the nature and scope of copyright and how it affects those who work in cultural sector institutions and the users of those institutions. * to recognise how copyright is set to change over the next year, in ways that will affect all cultural institutions. By the end of the course participants will have an understanding of copyright and be more confident about dealing with copyright materials. Training Methods A presentation followed by exercises and group work. Preparation No particular preparation is required, but it may be helpful for participants to look at relevant publications (E.g. Tim Padfield 'Copyright for Archivists and Records Managers' or Graham Cornish 'Copyright', both published by Facet). Also, look at the materials available following the recent conference on copyright and archives<http://www.create.ac.uk/blog/2013/10/09/reactions-media-from-archives-and-copyright-symposium-now-available/>, especially on risk management. Trainer Tim Padfield is retired, but continues to advise and represent the Archives and Records Association on copyright issues. He spent his entire career at The National Archives (Public Record Office), and for half of it was the Copyright Officer. He has advised archivists, librarians and curators on their copyright problems, was chair of the Libraries and Archives Copyright Alliance for many years, is author of 'Copyright for Archivists and Records Managers' (now in its 4th edition) and is the representative of the International Council on Archives at meetings on copyright of the World Intellectual Property Organisation in Geneva.
