medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture

A far more up to date translation of these Letters - and where I am 90% certain you will find this ref if it exists - is the Penguin translation of 2003. Originally made by Betty Radice it was revised and updated by Michael Clanchy (author of the most recent scholarly Life of Abelard, 1997). Being Penguin, it is a decently inexpensive paperback and in print. Also just out (2013) is a major new edition/ translation (parallel texts) of the Letters &c by David Luscombe. This is very much a library book, being indecently expensive (£165) but Oxford UP.

MC & DL are probably the two leading Abelardian scholars operating in England at the moment.

"I care not if you bridge the sea,
Or ride secure the cruel sky,
Or build consummate palaces,
Of metal or of masonry;

But have you wine and music still,
And statues, and a bright-eyed love,
And foolish thoughts of good and ill,
And prayers to them who sit above ?"

James Elroy Flecker: "To a poet a thousand years hence." (1915)

  It might be in The Letters of Abelard and Heloise. The reference I have is to a translation by CK Scott Moncrieff. New York, Alfred A. Knopf, 1926

    Please excuse the x-posting:

    Someone once referred me to a letter from Abelard to Heloise, in which Abelard prayed that God reveal Himself in His fullness to Heloise and her nuns.

    Does anyone, off hand, know where the letter is to be found?

    Thanks so very much,

    Jeffrey
