Many thanks to everyone who has given their views and experiences of API for delivering collections content in the 'Collections Search' standard way but also as options for re-purposing collections data, anything from exhibition labels, marketing, online pop-up exhibitions, collaborative sharing, workflow management, commercial customers...the list goes on.
It's this sustainable, reusable approach to collections data that attracts me most - moving the spotlight away from a one-system 'collections online' delivery vehicle (costly) to the 'collections data' itself and being promiscuous with that.
We already submit data to Culture Grid, History Pin, Your Paintings and are keen to do more of this - applying an API-approach could enable us to do more, better and more efficiently. Culture Grid has been a great way for use to engage with Europeana through the project Partage Plus - I'd recommend Culture Grid to anyone looking to promote their collections online not only in the UK but as a means to getting on Europeana.
I agree also with Stephen's (BFI) comment on training to demystify API by the major suppliers. We use MimsyXG here (now in merger with Adlib and CALM as part of Axiell) so perhaps there's scope for current museum users to get together (London seems the common venue) to do a practical show-and-tell of their API wares?
