Yes I would think that a presentation to HER Forum would be best vehicle for an introduction and the agreement of a means to upload information into local HERs a priority, as also consultation with local authority archaeologists as to which groups and which sites might benefit from this initiative.  Sure there’s plenty of archaeology eroding out of rivers and streams currently in we landlocked authorities.

No interest here in landlocked Warwickshire, we don't even have a tidal estuary!

On a serious note, I get the feeling that the project is still in it's early stages but if the project is as big as they hope then perhaps as Graham suggests a presentation to the HER community may be a good idea. I think the HER Forum would be the best platform with a wider reach and bigger audience than ALGAO HER Committee, Chris what do you think?

Morning chums!

Perhaps a more reasoned reply than my tart response earlier. I think the tendency to think community archaeology is mainly fuelled by huge grants from central bodies spoils the idea and the way it works. I know Andrew Selkirk (bless him!) believes that community archaeology is just an excuse for people like ourselves to get large grants and then boss people around on an excavation (dig!) for a few weeks.

Nothing could be further from the truth. Community archaeology is hard work and needs long-term commitment, but ultimately, incredibly rewarding and productive. Several of our community archaeology groups in North Somerset have been working for years on fieldwalking, earthwork survey, geophysical survey, documentary work, with a minimum of grants (one £34k grant for purchasing geophysics kit): check out ycccart.co.uk for what a team can achieve.

In the end, archaeology in local authorities is vulnerable and subject to political whims: if based solidly in communities it is not.

This seems like a good idea in many ways - but I am concerned about how
any data will be integrated with HERs.
Maybe someone (you Chris as Chair of HER Forum? or Ben Wallace as Chair
of the ALGAO-UK HER Committee?), could invite MoLA to discuss their
plans with the HER community (a discussion on HER Forum and/or a
presentation at the next HER Forum meeting and/or the next ALGAO-UK HER
Committee?).
