Subject: Procedures and Things to be aware of for Museum Volunteers Demonstrating within Museum Displays

Hi All,

I was just wondering whether anyone has any guidelines or procedures that they would be willing to share that relate to Volunteers and Demonstrators using Museum displays and exhibits within working demonstrations?

I’m specifically talking about things like demonstrating a Blacksmith’s Forge or a print workshop. We have risk assessments but with new volunteers keen to work in these areas I need to get across to them the way that we do or don’t treat/use certain objects in our collection, the levels of care that items might require (especially if they’re getting worn or damaged, etc), not taking objects off site for demonstrations unless permission has been obtained, etc.

It’s that level between demonstrating a collection object and an object just being a piece of equipment that they’re used to using.

I hope this makes sense. Can anyone help?

Lisa
