Tomorrow, 4pm, Newcastle University: Chantal Wright: Portraying a Tongue. A Translation Experiment SML Research Seminar Series<http://www.ncl.ac.uk/sml/about/seminars/item/Translation-Experiment> Location: Research Beehive 2.21, Old Library Building Time/Date: 27th February 2014, 16:00 - 17:00 Exophonic writer Yoko Tawada, born and educated in Japan, writes in Japanese and in German, her adopted tongue. Her prose text 'Porträt einer Zunge' Portrait of a Tongue is the narrator's portrait of a German woman, referred to only as P, who has lived in the United States for many years and whose German has become inflected by English. Translator Chantal Wright decided to adopt an experimental approach to the translation of this text, interweaving her commentary with Tawada's text. She will discuss the rationale for her approach, situating it within recent developments in Translation Studies, and read excerpts from the text. All welcome!
