Conference: Article 24 UNCRPD is this a Brown v. Board of Education moment?

Date:               22nd of February

Time:               9:15 – 5pm (CPD points available)

Venue:             Áras Moyola, NUI Galway.

On the 60th Anniversary of the seminal case of Brown v. Board of Education we raise the question is it time that decision be applied to children with disabilities?  The US Supreme Court stated:

In these days, it is doubtful that any child may reasonably be expected to succeed in life if he is denied the opportunity of an education.  Such an opportunity, where the state has undertaken to provide it, is a right which must be made available to all on equal terms. … Separate educational facilities are inherently unequal.

The UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities refers to a right to an effective and inclusive education.  Is Ireland ready to comply with this requirement?

This conference brings together academics and practitioners from the fields of law and education as well as parents who because of their circumstances had to become advocates and litigants on behalf of their children.  Click here for the programme.

On the evening before the main conference there is a student conference that is free to all, and the students will address the same topic as the main conference.  Please click here for that programme.

Registration is available here.
