Little known aftermath of World War One; the westernmost Austrian province of Vorarlberg wanted to join Switzrland (but was prevented by the Allies and by Swiss Government indifference).

Apparently (see link) quite a few neighbouring provinces of other States have expressed an interest in joining the Swiss Confederation.

Had Vorarlberg managed to join this would have left Leichtenstein as an 'island' surrounded by Swiss territory. Since Switzerland is itself surrounded by EU territory (getting towards being a 'country'), this would have been perhaps the only instance of a country within a country within a country.

OK, now I'll get back to some more serious geography.....
