Ashmolean Museum and Worcester College, Oxford: Sackler Fellowship in Chinese Numismatics

Worcester College, in conjunction with the Ashmolean Museum, invites applications from suitably qualified men and women for a Research Fellowship, to be held in the Heberden Coin Room in the Ashmolean Museum, for a period of three years. The post will be defined as a Senior or Junior Research Fellowship according to the experience and qualifications of the successful candidate. The appointment will commence from 1st October 2014 or as soon as possible thereafter.

Chinese coinage represents one of the two principal monetary traditions in the world. There are very few experts in Chinese coinage outside Asia. The radical under-representation of the subject in the West presents a significant strategic opportunity to develop this field of numismatics and economic and monetary history. There is great scope for developing the subject in Oxford, where the large and important collection of Chinese coinage has never been properly exploited.

The principal role and duties of the Fellow will be to work under the direction of the Assistant Keeper (South Asia) to put the collection of Chinese coins in good order, to capture data on the Chinese numismatic collection and enter details on a museum database, and to undertake and publish research, including a catalogue of part of the collection, the scope of which might depend on the interests and expertise of the successful candidate.

Applications are sought from those with a proven ability to carry out research of an historical or archaeological nature in Chinese and English, a relevant post-graduate degree, either completed or due to be completed by October 2014, a genuine interest in learning about western and eastern numismatic methodologies, and a willingness to use museum databases and smart data capture equipment (for which training will be provided). Experience of work in a museum environment and the ability to carry out research of an historical or archaeological nature in French are desirable.

The post is full-time and fixed-term for 3 years. The Fellow will receive a stipend at Grade 6 (commencing at £26,527 per annum), which will be revised annually. The Fellow will be entitled to free College accommodation (but will be responsible for Council taxes and utility bills), if available, or to a housing allowance of £5,000. As a member of the Senior Common Room, he or she will be entitled to lunch and dine free of charge in College whenever the kitchens are open.
