Lancaster University - Deparment of Mathematics and Statistics Reference: A881 Two Lectureships in Statistics Advert and application details: http://hr-jobs.lancs.ac.uk/Vacancy.aspx?ref=A881 Salary: £32,590 to £45,053 Closing Date: Friday 14 March 2014 Applications are invited for two Lectureships in Statistics, at least one of which will be in Medical Statistics, to commence on 1 September 2014 or as soon as possible thereafter. We are seeking candidates with research interests in any area of medical statistics or statistical modelling but appointments that strengthen our existing research groups are particularly sought. You should have a proven track-record in publishing research work of international quality and demonstrate a clear potential for attracting research funding and research studentships. We seek people who will be capable and enthusiastic contributors to the Department’s undergraduate programme, helping to deliver the existing syllabus and to expand the range of modules offered. Lancaster University has one of the largest and strongest statistics research groups in the UK comprising 21 academic staff, 7 research associates and 38 FTE research students. In the 2008 RAE, 60% of Lancaster’s Statistics and OR outputs were graded as 3* or 4*, with the group ranked in the top 5 in the UK in terms of HEFCE quality-related allocation. The statistics group takes a leading role in the development of statistical methodology and the application of statistics in medicine and industry. Current research interests include biostatistics, clinical trials, epidemiology, extreme value theory, Markov chain Monte Carlo, particle filtering, time series and wavelets. In collaboration with the Department of Management Science, we host the EPSRC-funded Centre for Doctoral Training in Statistics and Operational Research in partnership with industry, STOR-i. STOR-i was established in 2010, as one of only three Doctoral Training Centres in the Mathematical Sciences. It has recently obtained a multi-million pound award from EPSRC, Lancaster University and several leading industrial partners to fund 60 students entering the Centre’s doctoral programme in five cohorts from 2014. STOR-i has developed an international reputation for the quality of its research training at the interface of statistics and OR with industry. As such, the group regularly hosts visits from leading international researchers and industrial representatives. The department’s Medical and Pharmaceutical Statistics Research Unit (http://www.mps-research.com) works closely with the pharmaceutical industry and public sector researchers and develops novel statistical methods of study design and data analysis for use in the pharmaceutical and medical research community. It is also an integral part of the MRC-funded North West Hub for Trial Methodology Research, leading the Hub’s work stream on early phase trials and the adaptive designs working group of the Hub network (http://www.methodologyhubs.mrc.ac.uk/). The Department has thriving undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in Statistics. For example, our MSc course in Statistics attracts over 20 students each year, including pathways in both medical and pharmaceutical statistics and has funding for 7 studentships for students on these pathways from the NIHR and MRC.
