You may find our new Handbook of Cities of the South useful … its express aim is to look at urban development from a southern starting point. There are 50 chapters … so many of the substantive issues are covered and the contributor includes many of the leading voices.

I don't have a syllabus to share, but I took an undergraduate course several years ago that used a fairly well written book on this exact topic.

It's called The New urban Sociology by Mark Gottdiener and Ray Hutchinson.  I'm having a hard time tracking down the table of contents online for you to look at, but if there is a copy in your library I would certainly give it a shot.  The chapters can be read in any order (though the first couple chapters do a fine job laying out some of the Marxist and political theories researchers bring to their studies of development and cities).

Here is a link to the first two chapters: http://ambounds.org/Class/ReadingCh1Ch2.pdf

I should warn you, however, the writing style becomes dry in sections.  So use sparringly, lol.  Also, I could likely track down the syllabus for the course if you are interested.

Subject: [URB-GEOG-FORUM] advice on syllabus

Hi,

I am in the process of designing a syllabus for a course on urbanization and development in a global context.  The course will be geared towards upper-level undergraduates.  Does anyone have syllabi they would be willing to share for a similar course?  I am especially interested in suggestions for good readings that take critical approaches to analyzing trends in urban development but that do not require extensive background in geography and critical theory, something most of my students won't have.  I am also looking for suggestions on engaging book chapters or case studies that look at urban poverty in the global south.

Thanks in advance for all of your suggestions,
Dena
