French Society for Scottish Studies Annual conference University of Bordeaux 9th to 11th October 2014. CALL FOR PAPERS The Production and Dissemination of Knowledge in Scotland: Invariance and Specificity This conference will address the subject of the production and dissemination of all types of knowledge in Scotland through the ages. Education has traditionally been an area in which Scottish distinctiveness has been cherished and asserted and indeed for roughly three hundred years from the end of the sixteenth century, the Scottish population was probably the best educated in the world. The history of the national system of education is thus understandably a source of much pride and, it has to be said, the object of a certain amount of mythologisation. This conference will provide an opportunity to tease out the part of truth and that of myth in the idea that education in Scotland has always been democratic and egalitarian; that it is based on a broad curriculum providing opportunities for advancement through hard work irrespective of social status or wealth. The "democratic intellect" defended and encouraged in Scottish universities through their emphasis on useful knowledge and accessibility to all classes of society and then supposedly lost through the process of anglicisation might similarly be investigated. The conference will also be an opportunity to examine the part education, research and knowledge transfer (in the areas of science, medicine, law etc.) plays in contemporary Scottish society and is accorded in the policies of the Scottish Government. We would particularly welcome proposals for papers on invariance and specificity in any of the following areas: - The history of education and learning in Scotland. - The discourse of knowledge transfer in Scotland. - Scottish Government education policy and its impact on Scottish society. - Modes of knowledge transfer between Scotland and the rest of the world. - Democratic intellectualism and the circulation of knowledge within Scotland. - The production of knowledge by the professions in Scotland. - Representations of teaching and learning in Scottish literature. - The relationship between knowledge and the arts in Scotland. - Scotland as a knowledge-based economy. - Popular knowledge and its dissemination in Scotland. - The influence of the Scottish Enlightenment. - Women and the transmission of knowledge in Scotland. - Literature and learning in Scottish schools. - The rise of the "expert" in Scottish society. - The Scottish child and learning/learning through play. L'éducation a toujours été un domaine où le caractère distinctif écossais a été consacré et affirmé et, en effet, pendant environ trois cents ans dès la fin du XVIe siècle, le peuple écossais fut probablement le mieux instruit du monde. L'histoire du système national de l'éducation est donc tout naturellement une source de beaucoup de fierté et, il faut le dire, l'objet d'une certaine mythologisation. Cette conférence sera l'occasion de démêler la part de vérité de celle du mythe dans l'idée que l'éducation en Écosse a toujours été démocratique et égalitaire, basée sur un large programme d'études et offrant des possibilités d'avancement par le travail indépendamment de la classe sociale ou de la richesse. La "démocratisation de l'intelligence" défendue et encouragée dans les universités écossaises grâce à l'importance accordée aux connaissances utiles et accessibles à toutes les strates de la société, puis prétendument perdue dans un processus d'anglicisation, pourra également être examinée. La conférence sera aussi l'occasion d'examiner la place accordée à l'éducation, la recherche et le transfert des connaissances (dans les domaines de la science, la médecine, le droit etc.) dans la société écossaise contemporaine et dans les politiques du gouvernement écossais. Nous invitons des propositions de communication sur l'invariance et la spécificité dans les domaines suivants : - L'histoire de l'éducation et de l'apprentissage en Ecosse. - Le discours du transfert de la connaissance en Ecosse. - La politique du gouvernement écossais en matière d'éducation et son impact sur la société écossaise. - Modes de transfert des connaissances entre l'Ecosse et le reste du monde. - La démocratisation de l'intelligence et la circulation des connaissances au sein de l'Ecosse. - La production de connaissances par les professions libérales en Ecosse. - Les représentations de l'enseignement et l'apprentissage dans la littérature écossaise. - La relation entre la connaissance et les arts en Ecosse. - L'Ecosse : une économie fondée sur la connaissance. - Le savoir populaire et sa diffusion en Ecosse. - Le rayonnement des Lumières Ecossaises. - Les femmes et la transmission du savoir en Ecosse - Le role de la littérature dans l'apprentissage scolaire. - La montée de l '<<expert>> dans la société écossaise. - L'enfant écossais et l'apprentissage/l'apprentissage par le jeu.
