Hi Rachel and Liz,
I have recently attended a course at Spectacle with Mark, as part of Contested Cities project. I would really recommend it, particularly as Mark has extensive knowledge and practical experience of working with communities and making great films.
If there is something in particular that you want to focus on, such as participatory video training, it would defiantly be worth asking if he could offer it.

HI Rachel,

We have someone attending this course in March. The focus might not be participatory video but it does include participatory techniques.

Are you interested in using film in your anthropological research? Spectacle, an award winning independent television production company specialising in documentary, community-led investigative journalism and participatory media, offer affordable weekend training in Digital Video Production for Anthropologists and Social Researchers in London.

Feedback from former participants:

This is the type of course every anthropologist should take - Dr. Mattia Fumanti, Department of Social Anthropology, University of St. Andrews

Simple, uncomplicated approach to something people are interested in but perhaps scared of trying out.” - Julie Botticello, Research Associate, UCL

This is an intensive, hands-on, weekend training course with emphasis on developing your practical filming skills, participatory techniques, and do-it-yourself confidence that will enhance the quality and validity of filmed fieldwork material. The short, condensed and effective course will give all participants a solid foundation of practical knowledge and a working understanding of digital cameras, sound recording, and filming on location. Participant numbers are a maximum of 6.

Our 2014 courses are scheduled for:

Saturday & Sunday Jan 18 - 19 2014 10:00-16:00
Saturday & Sunday Mar 22 - 23 2014 10:00-16:00
Saturday & Sunday May 17 - 18 2014 10:00-16:00

We can also arrange courses during the week and at other weekends with a group of 3 or more trainees. Spectacle offer group booking discounts: 3 - 5 people 10% discount, 6+ 20% discount. We also offer concessionary rates for self-financing unemployed and full-time students.

You can find more information regarding the dates and fees of the courses on our website: www.spectacle.co.uk/projects_page.php?id=496 and on our Facebook page: www.facebook.com/events/416323175147294/
