Hi Michael, everyone
The final report from the 2013 conference is available as a PDF here:
http://www.britishscienceassociation.org/sites/default/files/root/scicomconf/SCC2013_REPORT_FINAL.pdf
Further to this, we’ve collected together lots of blog posts, the presentations, our podcast and storified tweets of the sessions here:
http://www.britishscienceassociation.org/science-communication-conference/reporting-2013-conference
On a related note, we’re very pleased to announce that on Monday we’re releasing an ebook of essays from some of the speakers from the 2013 Conference
which gives some perspectives on some of the meaty topics from last year, selected by the delegates. It includes contributions from academia, sci-comm practitioners and the media – it’s a really interesting read!
If you have any ideas that you would like to discuss before submitting your proposal, please do get in touch with me off-list or give us a ring (020
7019 4940) and we’ll be happy to chat!
Best wishes,
Toby

Subject: Re: [PSCI-COM] A few FAQs
Is the report from last year available in PDF format? Or do I have to read it on line at issuu? (That is nearly as bad as Zinio as a format, which is saying
something.) My Internet connection isn't good enough for effortless browsing.
I thought that looking at that would be a guide to what has happened and what might fit into this year’s event.
I was interested in looking at the apparent parting of the ways of “media science” and the wider PEST community. At one time they were very close. But that
was back when the community was tiny.
Maybe the PSCI community has outgrown media science. I do see a few token media people were at last year’s bash, but I hardly think that Brian Cox, and I am
a fan, represents the mainstream.
And talking about science in the media, as in the inevitable presence of the SMC, is not the same as media folk talking about what they do and, more important,
why they do it, which is often misunderstood. No, as Roger Highfield recently explained, the media do not exist to educate the public about science. They are there to sell their publications.
Maybe it is the role of the ABSW’s bash to roam this territory.

Subject: [PSCI-COM] A few FAQs
Hello,
If you were thinking of
submitting a proposal for the
Science Communication Conference (1 & 2 May, Surrey), there have been a few questions that have cropped up that I thought I would share if it’s of use to anyone else!
·
Anyone can submit a proposal
·
We accept proposals from international organisations as well as those based in the UK
·
You can submit more than one proposal if you have more than one idea
·
If you don’t have a full session, but a vague outline of an idea, please enter it on the
shared Google doc so others can add to it or suggest speakers to that session
·
We will provide other opportunities like having a stand or showing a poster or similar, so if you don’t want to run a session but want to have a presence
at the Conference then contact me directly
·
All the proposals will be read by a team from the British Science Association and the Wellcome Trust, and then the shortlist will be looked at by our Steering
Committee, a new element of the Conference who will offer advice and suggestions regarding the programming.
Really looking forward to reading your ideas.
PS the deadline is this Friday however as I am not back in the office until Monday morning, then I won’t know if you actually submit it Sunday evening!
Thanks,
Alice
I work part time. My usual working days are Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. If you require an urgent response on my non-working days, please email Monica Lobo,
