Hi Jane

It’s not an industry I have a great deal of experience in but what I think is widely acknowledged is that it is a dangerous industry with risks. If he is going to use explosives and do shot firing for example could his lack of vision affect the safety element?  Also he really needs to protect his good eye in such a hazardous environment and is that likely to deteriorate? A couple of years isn’t a long time to get used to increased awareness with regard to having monocular vision.

I think he needs to do some research on the health and safety and fitness standards in the countries he wants to work as they are likely to be all different.

Hopefully others with more experience will reply.

Subject: [OCC-HEALTH] FW: RE: Acquired Monocular Vision

Hi

I have been asked by a Mining Engineer student if his acquired monocular vision will affect his future employment in other countries.

He states:

“I lost the vision in April 2012 I am currently in the process of quantifying any losses.

I have spoken to a few lecturers at Uni about whether they think it could affect my employability. I am basically just putting the feelers out to determine whether there is likely to be a problem or not. I need to get a general feeling on the situation and as I am looking to travel with my work I need to try and find out as much as I can about a multitude of countries.”

In my opinion it should not affect his employability in the UK but I’m not sure re other countries and I was hoping that someone would be able to give me some information or advice.

This individual is coping fine with day to day activities, driving and he felt fine when he was working in a quarry during the summer holidays.

I would appreciate advice please.

Thank you.

Kind Regards

Jane
