medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture

Meg, perhaps what you are searching for is the *cappa nigra* or *cappa
choralis*, which has a long history leading into the development of the
more elaborate cope (*pluviale*) for liturgical use, while the old *cappa
nigra* itself survived in more-or-less its original form for non-ceremonial
and practical purposes. These references which may help, though they are
rather old:

Thurston, Herbert. "Cope." *The Catholic Encyclopedia. *Vol. 4. New York:
Robert Appleton Company, 1908.

Norris, Herbert.* Church Vestments: Their Origin & Development*. London:
Dent, 1949.
Some pages on Google Books here: http://bit.ly/1echuzX

Leclercq, H. "Chape", in *Dictionnaire d'archéolgie chrétienne et de
liturgie *3:1 (1913), cols. 365-381.
(Maybe this is digitised somewhere by now, but I cannot find it.) --
