That reminds me of a tale my first research supervisor, Charles Ross, told me of unwinding a Chancery Roll in the Public Record Office to find a dead rat in the middle.

medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture My colleague, David Jordan, reminds me about an early printed book at Salisbury Cathedral that had a mouse crushed between pages; schoolboys had done it and left a note about their accomplishment, and librarians have to this day not removed the mouse.
