Fremlin worked for Mass Observation throughout the early part of the war and wrote, Mass Observation's study of a small wartime factory community, War Factory, published in 1943. The novels, which were all written after her involvement with MO, are most crime/thrillers. In 1960, her first novel, The Hours Before Dawn won a Edgar Allan Poe Award.
