Many thanks to all who responded!  Our enquirer was after a really quick and easy, evidence-based-but-concisely-summarised sort of resource, for use at point-of-care.  Sources such as NHS Evidence and TRIP require too much searching for our enquirer’s purpose, and the NICE guidelines are too lengthy to wade through at the patient’s bedside.

Here’s a summary of the most plausible-looking resources:

·         The West Mercia Guidelines are now known as the Bedside Clinical Guidelines.  A subscription is required, and the disc is then uploaded onto your Intranet.  One hospital using it says most of the documents have to be edited to localise.  It seems that a mobile app is being developed.

·         Free possibilities provided by the NHS include Clinical Knowledge Summaries and NICE Pathways.  There’s also the Athens-authenticated Map of Medicine.

·         One Trust has taken the approach of developing their own custom-made guidelines, supported by the library and based largely around the NICE guidance.

·         Another Trust uses the Grey Book – also free, I think – which “aims to provide clear advice to junior staff on what to do when confronted with some of the more common medical emergencies”.

·         Dynamed and UpToDate were also mentioned.  They both require a subscription.

Kind regards,

Lesley H.

Subject: Guidelines for junior doctors

Hello,

We’ve been asked about a source of clinical guidelines for doctors, preferably with easy online access.  Can anyone recommend anything?  One of the doctors mentioned “West Mercia Guidelines” but I haven’t been able to find a website or any subscription information for that one.

With hopeful thanks,

Lesley H.
