Obviously!

(urk, am I the only person wondering what a KYP is, and where to get one?)

Nearly the weekend…

Thanks Sarah,

Obviously having a KYP or similar online resource helps with promotion, twitter local newspapers etc.

Hi Pete

Thanks for your reply.

I had seen the course and would have loved to attend but funds to do not allow unfortunately. I see both you and Sheena are presenting too which makes me feel more L (I love Know Your Place)

I agree totally about promoting within the authorities. Also thanks for your other suggestions J

Best wishes

Sarah

In terms of twitter use there’s an interesting looking course in Oxford in Feb that Jane mentioned recently www.conted.ox.ac.uk/V400-327

We’ve done many of the usual promotion things; talks to local groups, events during Festival of Archaeology, school activities etc. One thing to focus on is joint working with other heritage partners or university departments.

One thing we mustn’t overlook is the value of promotion within our own authorities. Many council departments need to know about the HER, but are likely not to realise it.

Thanks Sarah and Sheena

Twitter is a great idea and something I would like to do here although I am not sure how it would stand with the council. I will have to make enquiries….

The agricultural show is a good idea – we have the East Of England show here and I do remember promoting Flag Fen at this a few years ago (and had a good response) although a lot of people had no idea what Flag Fen was. We jointly ran the stall with Burghley House, the museum and another site which I forget now but together they made a feature and made us stand out.

At our local heritage festival this year we also had a stand and were surprised at the number of people from all walks of life who came over and chatted. What came across at that event is that lots of people are interested in heritage but have no idea how to access a lot of it other than the museum. Not many people knew we even existed which is such a shame and one of the reasons why I want to actively promote us

Best wishes

Sarah

I think many HERs have produced leaflets, given talks to their local archaeology societies or university department. Some have even been lucky enough to have a stall/display at a local heritage event.

Arguably Twitter is unusual! Not many HERs are using this as a method to actually promote their services. I know a few others of you who do this but I won't name you :)

I would also think the copy of the Peterborough dataset available in the Cathedral Library is a fairly unusual method of promotion - I think you're the only one to do that Sarah!

I think its worth people discussing non-traditional methods of promotion. Whilst probably not 'unusual' as such I did man a stall for the Heritage & Conservation Team in Northumberland at a local argicultural show. That I think is a non-traditional target audience perhaps!

all the best

Sarah

Hi Sarah,

Not necessarily an unusual method, but we are using Twitter – follow us here: @WorCityHeritage

We do also use Facebook occasionally by linking into the existing Worcester City Council page, which means that we don’t have to maintain the page ourselves and can provide content on an as and when basis.

Best wishes,

Sheena

Hello All J

May I ask a Friday question….What unusual ways have you promoted the HER?

We are currently in the process of looking at promoting the HER and so thought it would be a good idea to ask how other HER’s have approached it.

All feedback very welcome

Best wishes

Sarah
