I have a short term vacancy for a Research Programmer to work in the Nottingham Geospatial Institute, University of Nottingham, on an Ordnance Survey funded research project called NaturalGeo (http://www.nottingham.ac.uk/~lgzwww/contacts/staffPages/kristinstock/NaturalGeo.htm), starting as soon as possible, until April/May, full time.

The project is about developing methods for context sensitive interpretation of natural language expressions describing location, and involves machine learning (specifically memory-based learning), as well as the use of ontologies and the comparison of several different methods for interpretation. We have developed the basic method, and need a programmer to assist with the implementation. We may also develop a web front end that takes text expressions as input and displays a query on a map (using Ordnance Survey data).

The main skill required is a high degree of proficiency in Java programming. Knowledge of any of the following is desirable: natural language processing, machine learning, ontologies, semantic web, web mapping plugins, spatial querying and/or OGC web services standards.

As well as technical knowledge, an ability and willingness to quickly learn and work with a number of different methods, techniques and technologies is essential, as the project covers a lot of different areas.

The pay rate is £14.78 per hour, and is located in Nottingham. Questions can be addressed to Dr Kristin Stock ([log in to unmask]).

Please send your CV and a cover letter describing your experience and qualifications relevant to the post and when you would be available to start, to [log in to unmask]<mailto:[log in to unmask]> as soon as possible. The post will remain open until filled.

Kind regards,

Dr Kristin Stock
