Would you like to play an important role in Chichester's museum and Tourist information point, The Novium museum, and lead on the delivery of our wide range of services?
We are currently seeking an experienced museum professional to lead our friendly and dedicated team as The Novium Manager. The successful applicant will be committed to providing exceptional service, have sound museum experience and a management background. 
Duties include the strategic management and development of The Novium's museum, tourism and retail services and operational management of the day to day staffing and activities. Duties also include responsibility for health and safety issues relating to the The Novium's services and overall maintenance of the building. 
Other duties include acting as budget manager for The Novium's revenue and trading budgets, producing monthly statistics and other reports, developing and implementing policies, procedures and the marketing plan, identifying opportunities and building relationships with other cultural venues to develop partnership working, along with any other duties that the Head of Service may direct.
The person appointed must possess a degree in Museum Studies, or similar, and either a Postgraduate qualification in Museum Studies, or similar, or at least three years museum and management experience. 
Experience of managing staff and volunteers is essential along with experience of managing budgets, producing detailed reports and developing and implementing policies and procedures. In addition knowledge of museum professional guidelines and health and safety legislation and procedures is essential. Previous experience of retail management and knowledge of retail reports and practices would also be an advantage.
The postholder needs to be good at communicating with people, whether verbally or in writing, and needs to be able to work effectively and co-operatively with staff, volunteers and the public (both on a one-to-one basis and in groups). The Novium is staffed by a small, friendly, well-knit team, and the Manager needs to be a good team worker, able to put across their point of view, but also sensitive to the needs and opinions of others. The person appointed needs to be able to work well on their own, and able to prioritise their workload effectively. They also need to be flexible and able to cope with the changing demands of the work.
It is also essential that the person appointed is fully computer-literate. The service is part of the District Council's intranet, which uses Microsoft Outlook, Word and other programmes. The museum also uses MODES for its collection catalogue and Cybertill for its retail services so familiarity and good working knowledge of these systems are desirable.
The District Council has a very active in-house training programme, and training in Health & Safety issues, internal procedures, IT and other matters will be given as required.
Normal working hours for this post are 37 hours over a 5 day period. The postholder will be expected to work a rota as The Novium will be open up to 7 days per week during the summer season.
